We are offering a 48-month PhD position (full time, 1.0 FTE) within the project ‘Democratic Literacy and Humor’ (DELIAH), funded by the European Research Council (ERC) with a five-year Horizon Europe grant (HORIZON-CL2-2024-DEMOCRACY-01-08). This PhD project offers a unique opportunity to work in an international research environment. In particular, the successful applicant will work on a sub-project focusing on ethnographic analysis of the humour of the displaced Ukrainians, focusing on two countries—Belgium and Estonia—whose policies regarding refugees and attitudes towards the war contrast in profound ways. Each country is to be analysed by means of netnography or online ethnography (i.e., documenting interactions in social media communities related to the topic, e.g., the Facebook groups of Ukrainians in Belgium and Estonia) and classical ethnography via open-ended individual and focus group interviews.

1. Foresight in disaster risk management: methodological challenges and innovation in Europe (supervisor Kati Orru)
This research project explores foresight techniques and data science methodologies to anticipate and prepare for emerging risks stemming from the complex nature of modern disasters. The project focuses on the experiences of using foresight techniques in predicting societal vulnerabilities to guide adaptive, preventive, or preparedness actions across Europe. It applies foresight techniques to predict emerging hazard scenarios and factors of vulnerability. The project explores the possibilities of predicting disaster vulnerabilities based on emerging hazard scenarios and applying merged state databases to model vulnerabilities.
Admitted student will work as a junior research fellow at the University. The estimated workload is 1.0 and the estimated time period is four years. Studies are expected to start in March 2024. The final workload and exact starting date will be fixed after the student is admitted, during work contract negotiations.
