Open calls in doctoral studies

We announce PhD study places open for admission at the University of Tartu here. There are four intakes:

  • 1–15 February (admission information is announced by 15 January) - some specialisations
  • 1–15 May (admission information is announced by 15 April) - main intake for all specialisations. Estonian citizens and Estonian master´s degree holders can apply on 1-15 June (except to the Faculty of Science and Technology)
  • 15–30 September (admission information is announced by 1 September) - some specialisations
  • 15–30 November (admission information is announced by 1 November) - some specialisations

In most cases, the admitted doctoral student will work as a junior research fellow at the university. The junior research fellow's salary is comparable to the Estonian average (in 2024 the minimum salary rate of junior research fellows is 1,830 euros per month for full-time work, net salary ca. 1450 euros). In some cases, admission may be for a study place without a work contract. Details are specified in each open call announcement. Read more about status and funding of doctoral students.

Please carefully read the requirements for the study place you are applying for. All international applicants are required to submit a proof of English proficiency, except applicants to the Russian Language and Literature specialisation (proof of Russian proficiency is required). There may be special requirements for your chosen specialisation or project.

We are offering a 48-month PhD position (full time, 1.0 FTE) within the project ‘Democratic Literacy and Humor’ (DELIAH), funded by the European Research Council (ERC) with a five-year Horizon Europe grant (HORIZON-CL2-2024-DEMOCRACY-01-08). This PhD project offers a unique opportunity to work in an international research environment. In particular, the successful applicant will work on a sub-project focusing on ethnographic analysis of the humour of the displaced Ukrainians, focusing on two countries—Belgium and Estonia—whose policies regarding refugees and attitudes towards the war contrast in profound ways. Each country is to be analysed by means of netnography or online ethnography (i.e., documenting interactions in social media communities related to the topic, e.g., the Facebook groups of Ukrainians in Belgium and Estonia) and classical ethnography via open-ended individual and focus group interviews. 

The PhD student will be asked to:

  • carry out the sub-project described above, in dialogue with the supervisor;
  • contribute to the successful advancement of the DELIAH project as a whole, and to the spirit of interdisciplinary exchange characterizing the project;
  • present research results at workshops and conferences, and publishing academic articles;
  • participate in regular meetings with the other project team members;
  • contribute to and/or co-edit the volume "Anthology of Ukrainian Humor after the Full-Scale Russian Invasion";
  • complete the PhD in the specified timeframe (4 years).

1. Foresight in disaster risk management: methodological challenges and innovation in Europe (supervisor Kati Orru)

  • Successful candidate has a strong knowledge of sociological theory, an understanding of foresight methods and innovative statistical methods, and a willingness to do co-creative research with Estonian and European disaster risk management experts.
  • This research project explores foresight techniques and data science methodologies to anticipate and prepare for emerging risks stemming from the complex nature of modern disasters. The project focuses on the experiences of using foresight techniques in predicting societal vulnerabilities to guide adaptive, preventive, or preparedness actions across Europe. It applies foresight techniques to predict emerging hazard scenarios and factors of vulnerability. The project explores the possibilities of predicting disaster vulnerabilities based on emerging hazard scenarios and applying merged state databases to model vulnerabilities.
